I have worked in the Canadian real estate industry since 1980 with such shopping centre/office developers as Marathon Realty Company Limited, Fidinam Canada Limited, and J.D.S. Investments Limited. During this period I spent three years as legal counsel with Canadaıs then premier retailer Dylex Limited. Consequently I have drafted and negotiated documentation from both sides of the landlord/tenant relationship and have obtained a practical knowledge of remedies, property management concerns, environmental issues, franchising, risk management and leasing issues for retail/office tenancies and land leases. In 1994, I started my own law practice with an emphasis on commercial leasing.

Primary responsibility was on the legal and practical issues that arose with our tenants. I worked comfortably with other senior management and instructed outside counsel where required.

While senior legal counsel at J.D.S., I quarterbacked and successfully implemented a plan to recover over $400,000.00 from a recalcitrant tenant. This tenant was trying to goad the landlord into terminating its lease and then upon termination would probably have disputed the damages in court. Through my action, I was able to recover this money without requiring outside counsel or commencing a costly and protracted legal action.
While employed at Itco Properties, I undertook a review of a companyıs insurance coverage which resulted in a substantial decrease in premiums, while expanding coverage and retaining the quality of insurer.
